Development of nuclear technology is closely related to the formation of radioactive waste (RW). Accumulation of long-lived radioactive isotopes poses a serious threat to the Earth's ecology. Their recycling remains a challenge, one way of solving which can be disposal in space.

In March 2013, at the Paris meeting of the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA), the Board of Trustees approved the research project «Space Disposal of Radioactive Waste», which should be completed in October 2015.

The research is performed in the format of an international research group IAA under the general supervision of General Designer SE «DO «South» A.V. Degtyarev.

Scale of the tasks associated with the management of radioactive waste , requires participation in research not only experts in the aerospace field, but also experts in the fields of nuclear physics, radiochemistry, environmental, international and space law.
