8K64 and 8K64U (SS-7) Missiles

The 8K64 is the first two-stage intercontinental ballistic missile designed by OKB-586.

The main innovation was the use of swiveling chambers of the steering engines as controls.

The missile could be equipped with two types of nuclear payload: a “light” warhead to fire at a maximum range, and a “heavy” warhead with a heavier charge to hit protected facilities (targets).

307 missiles were launched in total, with 91% success rate.
