Two types of missile complexes were developed: open-launch R-12 and silo-based R-12U. The missile took off from a silo using its own propulsion (gas-dynamic launch). The flat silo blast door was shifted aside on rails.

8K63 and 8K63U (SS-4) Missiles

The 8K63 is the first strategic missile designed by OKB-586. Its development embodied new trends in missile technology: the missile used high-boiling propellant components and an autonomous guidance and control system. The missile was designed for ground launch (8K63), then modified for silo launch (8K63U).

905 missiles were launched in total, with 97% success rate.
