8K67 (SS-9 Mod 1,2) Missile

The 8K67 is a two-stage tandem missile. During the missile design and test program, designers managed to ensure high leak tightness of propellant tanks and meet the requirement to store fueled missiles for 7 years. The 8K67 was the first missile to use a more energetic oxidizer, nitrogen tetroxide.

In 1963 – 1966, 85 launches were conducted under the flight development test program, 83% of them successful. Altogether 146 launches of all the missile versions were conducted.

8K69 (SS-9 Mod 3) Missile

The 8K69 is a first orbital missile designed by OKB-586. The flight profile called for the introduction of a deceleration stage, and the flight range was controlled by varying the sustainer cutoff time and the deceleration propulsion system ignition time.

19 missiles were tested during the flight development test program, 89% of the launches successful.

8K67P (SS-9 Mod 4) Missile

The main difference from the 8K67 missile is a new type of nose cone: a multiple reentry vehicle consisting of three warheads and ballistic missile defense penetration aids. This design required modifications to the onboard control system to provide electric coupling between the control system and the warhead, and improvement of launch support equipment.
