Development of Remotely Operated Machines (ROM) for elimination of failure
effects including radioactive waste handling.
The ROM system includes:
- remotely operated machines;
- system control hardware;
- ROM operation support hardware;
- ROM transportation support hardware;
- technical systems and general industry equipment.
These machines were designed for the ROM system:

RECONNAISSANCE MACHINE
DUST SUCTION MACHINE
DRILLING AND EXPLOSION/THRUST DESTRUCTION MACHINE
MECHANICAL CUTTING MACHINE
CENTRAL CONTROL BOARD
LASER (PLASMA) CUTTING MACHINE
DRY CARGO TRANSPORTATION MACHINE
BULLDOZER
TRANSPORTATION/LOADING
MACHINE
MULTIFUNCTIONAL HEADING MACHINE,
MOVABLE COMMUNICATION POST
WATER DRAINING/ DUST SUPPRESSION/ FIRE EXTINGUISHING MACHINE
Type of mounting: wheel mounting with electromechanical drive in the main reconnaissance
machine, crawler mounting with electrohydraulic and electromechanical drives
in other machines.
Type of control: remote control via a cable duct with technical vision aids.
In 1997 an experimental heading machine (see photo below) was built with a set
of integral implements (hydrohammer, twojaw and multijaw grabs, shovel bucket)
to verify some of technical solutions embodied in the ROM design. Integrated
tests and field tests demonstrated functionability of this class of machines.

While working on the investment project, it is planned to design any machine
included in the ROM system, issue design and operational documentation for an
experimental machine, prepare related production facilities, produce the ROM,
conduct plant, integrated and field tests, based on the test data update design
and operational documentation, prepare the production facilities and documentation
for serial production .
The ROM system was initially designed for under-reactor rooms in Chernobyl
power plant, Block 4. Some machines or groups of machines may be widely used
while decommissioning of power plants and other activities related to radioactive
waste handling as well as operations in any hazardous environment with restricted
personnel access.

The machines are designed by customer's request for any
emergency condition. Yuzhnoye-designed machines cost three of four times less
than analogous foreign hardware.
E.g. it is required to spend 1.5 million US dollars within two years to design
reconnaissance machines (main and auxiliary). The same amount will be required
for development of the dust suction and dust suppression machines. The design
price of other machines is between 200,000 and 750,000 US dollars depending
on their complexity. Design of all ROM modifications would require approximately
15 million US dollars.
